Solar Eclipse

Earn a once in a lifetime award

On August 21, 2017 there will solar eclipse across the entire North American continent. The best times to view the eclipse in Northern Star Council will be roughly 1:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Central Daylight Time. The BSA is providing a once in a lifetime opportunity to earn an award for all Scouts in conjunction with the eclipse. The award is a special patch that can be displayed by the Scouts. No one else will be able to earn or wear this patch after August 21.

Who Can Participate

All Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers, and Sea Scouts can participate in the program. The requirements vary slightly based on your age.

What are the Requirements

Requirements for all ages:

  1. Locate a site suitable for viewing either the total eclipse or the partial eclipse
  2. Describe how to safely view the eclipse
  3. Discuss with your group what you saw and felt during the eclipse. If you can, post your comments and eclipse photos on social media with the hashtag #BSAEclipse2017

Requirements by rank:

  • Cub Scouts: Discuss what a solar eclipse is with your leaders
  • Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts: Draw a diagram of the positions of the moon, earth, and sun to show how the solar eclipse happens
  • Venturers and Sea Scouts: Research Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington's 1919 experiment and discuss how it confirmed Einstein's theory of general relativity

What if it's Cloudy

This award can be earned rain or shine. Even if the weather is overcast, Scouts will still be able to notice a difference in overall sunlight during the eclipse.

How to receive your award:

The local Scout Shops will have the patches available through special order. For details on how to order your patches, call your local Scout Shop for directions.
